Solar panel questions & answers

WHY INSTALL PHOTOVOLTAIC (PV) SOLAR PANELS?
Your PV system will generate electricity for you. You will be paid by the government introduced ‘Feed in Tariff’ scheme for every unit of electricity you produce even if you use that electricity yourself.

Yes! you are actually paid for generating electricity yet you can use this electricity yourself which means you buy less from your supplier. This leads to huge savings on your bill coupled with a tax free income.

WHAT IS A ‘FEED IN TARIFF’ FIT?
The government started FITs to encourage the UK public to produce their own electricity. The feed in tariffs change throughout the year but a table has been provided by Ofgem on their website to show them. Click here to view it (.PDF format.)A typical 4 kW system installed in the West Midlands can produce hundreds of pounds a year, TAX FREE! 5 kW, 6 kW, 7 kW etc… The bigger the PV system, the more you will earn financially and the more you will save on your electricity bill.

WHAT IS AN ‘EXPORT TARIFF’?
It is a bonus payment for every kilowatt-hour (kWh) of surplus electricity your system exports to the electricity grid. For new Solar PV systems installed after 1st July 2016, the export tariff is 4.91p/kWh.

HOW ARE THE EXPORTS MEASURED?
All the power flows relating to the tariffs will in due course be metered. However, in the initial years before Smart Meters are widely used, the export element will be deemed to be 50% of the power generated by the system.

WHO PAYS ME?
Your electricity provider will pay you quarterly for the full 25 year term of your feed in tariff. They are legally required to do this under the renewable energy rules that have been introduced by the UK government to encourage PV users and to reduce our carbon emissions.

DO WE HAVE ENOUGH SUN IN THE UK TO MAKE OUR PV PANELS WORK?
Yes, surprisingly the UK annually receives 60% of the light falling on the equator. The West Midlands has an average of around 1100kWh per kW peak installed where panels are optimally positioned. South, South East or South Westerly facing roof tops are ideal for PV in the UK.

We have installed over 120 PV systems and have documented proof of how efficient and reliable these systems are in our area. (West Midlands) On average OUR PV system installations are performing about 12 to 20% above our predicted anual generation.

DO I NEED PLANNING PERMISSION?
No, PV systems fall under ‘Permitted development rights’ so most domestic PV systems do not require planning permission. Listed buildings may require planning permission but laws are very lenient where PV is involved.

HOW LONG WILL MY PV SYSTEM BE GUARANTEED FOR?
Photo voltaic panels have no moving parts so all MCS accredited PV panels are guaranteed for 25 years, but can remain efficient for up to 40 years. The higher the quality of the PV panel, the longer it remains efficient and the more electricity it will produce in cloudy or less light conditions. A high quality PV panel is essential for this.

WHY SHOULD I INVEST IN SOLAR PANELS?
• Lowers your energy bills and earns you income (tax-free for domestic properties)
• Generates electricity throughout daylight hours
• Maintenance free
• Easy to install
• Future proofs your electricity prices
• Lowers carbon footprint, emissions and dependency on fossil fuels
• Adds value to property. Tariffs can still be kept in your name and claimed if you move
